Coldplay and its latest album, X&Y hit the American chart top on Wednesday, with more than 737,000 copies sold and debuted on the first place in another 21 countries.
Even better, Coldplay debut with X&Y is ranked as the second biggest release for rock music in the United States.
According to Nielsen SoundScan, Coldplay with X&Y pushed Mariah Carey's latest album from the top of the Billboard 200 chart.
The strong debut for Coldplay third studio release was good news for the band's label, EMI. US success of Coldplay makes it second-biggest US debut of 2005 and number one in twenty-two countries.
"I don't really care about EMI," lead singer Chris Martin told Reuters at a recent TV appearance. "I think shareholders are the great evil of this modern world."
Produced by Danton Supple (Morrisey, Elbow) and the band themselves, the new album sounds like a natural progression from Clocks with a little more orchestration and 70s electronic influences, particularly of German techno group Kraftwerk.
The enigmatic cover of Coldplay new album has also caused some stir. The mystery behind the artwork was recently decoded by fans and was revealed to be Baudot code, a code that was used by early teleprinters, representing letters, numbers and symbols.
While the band is currently on their European tour, Coldplay plans to begin touring within North America in August of this year, beginning in Canada and traveling throughout the United States, wrapping up at the end of September.
