Another sexual comedy, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, was lucky this weekend, as it topped the North American box office.
The 40-Year-Old Virgin, a comedy about a man trying to lose his virginity got something over the weekend at North American box offices - $20.6 million in gross receipts, according to preliminary studio estimates.
The 40-Year-Old Virgin, starring and co-written by veteran comic actor Steve Carell, closed the weekend on the first place in the money rankings in its debut weekend.
The 40-Year-Old Virgin benefited from strong reviews despite the less-than-believable story plot. It's character, 40-year-old Andy Stitzer (Steve Carrell) has done quite a few things in his life but he never had sex. He finally meets Trish (Catherine Keener), a 40-year-old mother of three, but their is relationship based on a mutual no-sex policy.
Two other weekend debuts did very poorly. "Red Eye" directed by horror-movie veteran Wes Craven, an aviation thriller with a terrorism plot, premiered in second place with $16.5 million.
The animated aviation-related movie "Valiant", a Disney movie about pigeon squad participating in the Second World War, grossed only $6.1 million.
