This weekend's take brings the total earned by "The War of the Worlds" to $113.3 million in the six days since its June 29 release.
War of the Worlds made it the second-best Independence Day weekend, topped only by Spider-Man 2, which earned about $115.8 million over the four-day holiday weekend last year.
Ticket sales for War of the Worlds, however, weren't enough to end a box-office decline, Exhibitor Relations said. Sales for the top 12 films fell 25 percent from last year.
War of the Worlds is based on H.G. Wells's 1898 novel about an invasion by technologically superior aliens bent on destroying humanity.
