Steven Spielberg said earlier that he would have made War of the Worlds much earlier if it weren't for 1996 blockbuster, Independence Day.
Spielberg recently told a British movie magazine that "if I could have, I would have begun this movie 12 years ago. I bought at an auction the last surviving War of the Worlds radio script and it was amazing, I guess you could say a distillation of the novel."
However, Spielberg admits that he was a little disappointed when Independence Day came out: "Well, maybe I won't make it because they kind of picked the bones of that and put me off for a while."
After the success of Minority Report with Tom Cruise, Spielberg kept an eye open for any interesting projects that he could use to pair up with Tom again and that's where "War of the Worlds" came in. "I got interested in it again just in the course of trying to find something to do with Tom."

A Florida newspaper recently had the opportunity to interview Cruise about the upcoming film and he had this to say about the film's script: "it's the best first draft of a screenplay that I have ever read in my career."
Even though the film seems surreal as Martians attack planet Earth, Tom Cruise trusts the public will enjoy the picture. "I hope this film resonates with people. It resonates with me as a human being, as a man, as a father, I know as a parent, and as a person here on Earth. It is a film that is pretty scary. It is going to be intense. It is just an intense movie. I think if something is done well it will translate to an audience. All I can do is make a movie that I believe in..."
