Star Wars set ticket sales record with 50 million dollars grossed on tickets in the very first opening day; experts predict the Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith will beat Matrix in ticket sales.
Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith has raked in an estimated $16.5 million from 2,900 midnight screenings and selling $50 million worth of tickets in a single day.
The last installment in George Lucas' six-film, 27-year saga, was shown in 2,900 debut screenings in the US on Thursday.
Fans lined up to be the first to see "Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith" at one minute past midnight on Thursday, many dressed in full Star Wars regalia and sporting light sabers.
That's double what "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" took in during its midnight showings in 2003.
"Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith" took in more per screening than “Rings”,too.
Plus, the film released simultaneously in more than 100 countries, which is the widest global movie release of all time by industry publication Screen Daily.
"Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith" also breaks the previous single-day record of $44.8 million set by "Shrek 2" a year ago.
Brandon Gray of BoxOfficeMojo.com predicted to CNN Money that "Revenge of the Sith" could bring in $150 million in its opening weekend, easily breaking the four-day, $134 million record held by "The Matrix Reloaded."
