Fonda and Lopez Clash in Monster-in-Law

Jane Fonda and Jennifer Lopez show their funny and sometimes psychotic sides in this weekend's debut film Monster-in-Law, a funny take on classic story of frosty mother-in-law/daughter-in-law relations.

If you have already met the parents, met the Fockers and guessed who, then “Monster-in-Law” is your type of movie.

“Monster-in-Law” (New Line Cinema) tells a story of former talk-show host (Fonda) and her war against the free-spirited dog-walking artist Charlotte (Lopez). The love life of Charlotte is reduced to an endless string of disastrous blind dates, until she meets the perfect man, Kevin. Unfortunately, his merciless mother will do anything to destroy their relationship.

Overbearing and controlling, not to mention volatile, Viola Fields (Jane Fonda) has recently been canned from her job as a star news anchor. Fearing she will lose her son's affections as she has her career, Viola decides to break up the happy couple by becoming the world's worst mother-in-law. Helping her with her crazy schemes is Viola's long-time assistant, Ruby (Wanda Sykes). The gloves come off and it looks like Viola has finally met her match.

Despite its everfresh theme, classic comic gigs and over-the-top exaggerated ugliness introduced once by War of Roses, “Monster-in-Law” is not your typical “Meet the Fockers” comedy. Jane Fonda lets you see the hurt and pain behind Viola's eyes, even when she's being hilariously vicious. And J.Lo, even though she's not quite a believable hippie, does great stuff turning hippie Charlotte into fighting Charlotte who will go over the top to win her man. There’s a lot of real tension between the two women, and even the happy ending is not as predictable as you may expect from a romantic comedy.

"I'm very different today and ready to laugh, and this character came along that's bigger than life and over the top," Jane Fonda told FOX News when commenting the Monster-in-Law.

PG-13 for sex references and language.
