Today scientists are investigating a number of potential preventive therapies for breast cancer, including retinoids. Unlike other experimental therapies, retinoids may be effective in premenopausal women and in those whose tumors aren't estrogen-positive.
Another promising direction of breast cancer research is flaxseed. Phytoestrogens are naturally occurring compounds that lower circulating estrogens in your body. Flaxseed is particularly high in one phytoestrogen, lignan, which appears to inhibit estrogen production and which may have the ability to stop the growth of breast cancer tumors. If so, this would be a particularly encouraging development, because flax is a natural food rather than a drug. Flax is also being investigated for its beneficial effects on such conditions as cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis.
