Janet Jackson obtained the restraining order against Robert Gardner whom Jackson says has been harassing her non-stop for nine years.
Janet Jackson put in a request for the order on March 1, 2004, months after Gardner tried to bring a box cutter and knife to the New York studio where she was rehearsing a performance for "Saturday Night Live."
Janet Jackson said in documents that Gardner "has been following me, sending me faxes and letters and attempting to arrange in-person meetings for nine years."
Robert Gardner, 46, told in court that he had business matters to discuss with Jackson as well as personal matters he preferred to keep private. "I do not want to be considered a stalker," he said.
Gardner was ordered by a Superior Court judge to stay at least 100 years away from Ms. Jackson, and not to contact her family, agents, attorneys or managers. The restraining order will remain in effect for three years.
Meanwhile, Angela Whitterson, a woman in Cincinnati who filed a request for civil protection against Janet Jackson claiming the singer bugged her home and car, had her order denied by a judge on Tuesday.
