I'm going on a first date with a guy I really like this Friday and don't have a clue what to wear. It'll be cinema then drinks. Please help!
"What impression do you want to create?" asks stylist Fi Ivin of Image Impact. "That's the question you need to be clear about in your mind. Do you want to come across as having a very definite style of some kind? If you do, you'll need to research what's really you and be sure you're comfortable with carrying that off on a first date - the last thing you want to be worrying about is whether you can walk in those heels."
The safest choice is jeans and a top. There are lots of lovely tops around at the moment that combine a shirt style with something a little more feminine: a ruffled neckline on a crossover shirt, for example, or you could try something a little more romantic with a floaty shirt and camisole underneath.
For a more creative look, if you're tall enough for the new tunic-style tops, try one of those, with or without a T-shirt underneath. Denim might be OK, although it depends on the venue, as it is very casual. If you want something a little more sophisticated, trousers could be perfect. The new linen look, wider-legged style looks great; if not, go for a narrower cut or bootleg which tends to suit everyone. Scruffy shoes and bag are always a let down so make sure these are in good nick and complement your overall look.
