TomKat started last April with a phone call to the office of Katie Holmes' publicist. It was Tom Cruise's agent, saying his client wanted to meet with Katie. Everyone assumed it was about business, but Tom Cruise had other things on his mind, according to a source.

"They met in his office and talked for over three hours, and none of it had to do with work," says the source. "But by the end, he asked her out on a date."

Of course, Katie Holmes who famously told Seventeen magazine that she grew up wanting to marry Tom said yes. "She couldn't believe Tom Cruise was asking her out!" And that's when things took a strange turn.

A few days after their first meeting, an insider says, Tom Cruise arrived at Katie's Hollywood home in a stretch limo filled with flowers, chocolate - and a copy of the Scientology handbook!

The pair then drove to a hangar at the Santa Monica airport, where one of Tom Cruise's private jets was parked. Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes boarded the plane, but instead of flying off, the insider says, they enjoyed a lavish dinner at an on-board table set for two. Says the insider: "It was like a fantasy for Katie."

But it's very likely that when Katie Holmes, 26, dreamed of dating Tom Cruise, she imagined them alone together. Instead, the source claims, "Tom kept having these friends' drop by [the plane]." And the visitors were all fellow Scientology members who praised the virtues of the religion.

In the morning, Tom Cruise asked Katie Holmes to fly to Rome with him the next day, where they stayed in a $3,500-a-night suite in Rome's luxe Hotel Hassler.

The relationship developed at lightning speed as Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes kissed for the paparazzi in an unprecedented display of intense romance.

But as Star magazine reported, the Ohio-based Holmes clan was in the dark about their daughter's developing romance with twice-divorced father of two Tom Cruise, 43.

Katie Holmes confirmed media reports of love to her family days after the couple's first date. "It was a total shock to them," says the source, "and she told them she would make some serious changes - beginning with her name. She asked her family to call her Kate from now on."

Since then Katie's transformation from bright-eyed ingénue to one half of Hollywood's couch-jumping power couple has happened quickly. And considering the fast engagement, on June 17, and, on October 5, the surprising pregnancy announcement which was especially shocking considering Katie's Roman Catholic upbringing- it's no wonder that Tom Cruise's increasing influence may have her parents concerned.

According to the Seattle PI the prenuptial agreement that Tom Cruise reportedly has asked Katie Holmes to sign states that "if they stay wed for five years, she gets a nice chunk. If they're together for 10, the amount more than doubles." The last thing Katie Holmes wants is her dad, Martin, to be "bickering" with Tom's camp over a prenup, says a source.

Despite the split rumors, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes seem to enjoy themselves as they are moving forward with their wedding plans. Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are "looking forward to a long and happy life together as a family," said a statement issued by their publicist.

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are expected to get married later in the year.
