Severe psoriasis has been found to actually increase the risk of death in people.
It has been found that severe cases of psoriasis actually cause an increased risk of death.
Psoriasis, a common inflammatory skin disorder, affects the skin and joints and has been linked to things such as smoking, alcohol use, obesity, cancer, and more.
The study authors stated "In addition, certain systemic therapies for psoriasis may rarely be associated with mortality, death, due to chronic cumulative drug toxicity or idiosyncratic reactions, and the disease itself may lead to death in rare instances."
Data collected in the UK from 1987 to 2002 from over 133,000 people was used. They found that people with severe psoriasis were 50 percent more likely to die compared to thise who did not have psoriasis. The ratio was 21.3 deaths per 1,000 people per year versus 12 deaths per 1,000 people per year.
A new study was don by the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and was published in the December issue of the Archives of Dermatology.
