Keeping Diabetes at Bay

Type 2 diabetes is an epidemic today. However, there is hope in the form of a new pre-diabetes clinical trial. Dr. Donna Ryan, from the Pennington Biomedical Research Center, discusses what people need to know about pre-diabetes.

More than 25 million people in North America country suffer from Type 2 diabetes. Dr. Donna Ryan is with the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Louisiana, where a study is evaluating a new drug treatment to prevent 41 million pre-diabetic people from developing the disease.

"Pre-diabetes is a condition that really precedes the diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes. We now know that people don't just get Type 2 diabetes. There is a period probably of about a decade that occurs before the diagnosis is actually made," Ryan says.

"It's possible to diagnose the pre-diabetes state with a blood test. And the Rapsodi study is providing free testing for pre-diabetes for individuals," Ryan suggested.

"There is no obligation to join the study if you are tested. It's important to know whether you have pre-diabetes or not."

Diabetes can be prevented and all the serious complications of diabetes can be prevented if doctors can intervene early.
