Keep Cholesterol in Check This Summer

Hot dogs, hamburgers and potato salad are all summertime favorites, but many of these foods are packed full of calories and fat - weighing heavy on the heart. Here are some tips on how you can keep your cholesterol levels in check.

As you are enjoying summer and its beloved foods, it's important not to let cholesterol health fall to the wayside - especially for the more than 100 million struggling with this.

"Choosing foods low in saturated fat and cholesterol is the first step for a healthy heart. Cook with lean meats, add whole grains to meals and load up on fresh vegetables and fruits," registered dietitian, Sandra Marin suggests.

Marin also recommends enjoying outdoor physical activities. If that's not enough to get cholesterol low, consider adding a natural cholesterol reducer.

"I like a supplement called CholestOff found in the vitamin aisle at drug and grocery stores. It helps block some of the absorption of dietary cholesterol."

As always, Marin emphasizes talking with a health care professional.
