Know Your Immune System Offenders

Most healthcare professionals agree that a healthy lifestyle promotes a healthy immune system — and keeps infections at bay.

A recent survey suggests that 34 percent people either don’t know about immune system health or don’t think about it. Whether it’s a flu, a common cold, or a more serious chronic disease resulting from infection, the truth is, the best way to stay healthy is to be healthy.

Acute infections are all too common with symptoms such as body aches, runny or stuffy nose, sore throat, fever, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps, and more. Intense but short-lived, acute infections stay just long enough to cause misery.

Chronic infections, on the other hand, last a long time with continuing and recurring symptoms that are often difficult to identify and treat. Left undiagnosed and untreated, chronic infections can severely and negatively impact your health for years to come.

Here are the ways the immune system is damaged on daily basis.

Illness.
While the immune system is busy fighting one infection, it’s vulnerable to attack by even more infectious germs.

Unhealthy diet and/or obesity.
Excessively eating highly processed foods and drinking alcohol causes nutritional deficiencies that can severely compromise the immune system.

Stress.
When the body senses stress, the immune system shuts down and the adrenal glands kick in to release cortisol as a way of coping with stress. Repeated or chronic stress keeps the body in this “fight or flight” mode—and suppresses the immune system leaving it unable to fight additional infections.

Antibiotics.
While antibiotics may help bacterial infections, many antibiotics—especially broad-spectrum antibiotics—kill not only the offending bacteria, but ALL bacteria including the good bacteria that helps fight infection. Without these healthy organisms, the body becomes vulnerable to additional infections.

Insomnia.
A deep, rejuvenating sleep allows the body to repair itself and produce hormones that help rebuild the immune system. Without sleep, the immune system is left in a weakened—and vulnerable—state.

Age.
Newborns and infants have immature immune systems that can’t fully protect them, making them more vulnerable to infection. Likewise, older adults are more susceptible to infection since the immune system declines with age.

Environmental toxins.
Mercury and other heavy metals from dental fillings, vaccinations, fish, industrial processes, and the environment—and the chemical additives, preservatives, pesticides, and herbicides often found in the food supply—can weaken the immune systems and open the door to infections.

Transfusions and transplants.
Sometimes the body will react negatively to new blood or organs and cause the immune system to shut down.

Medical therapies.
Many intensive drug therapies like chemotherapy not only kill damaged cells but healthy cells, too—and increase the risk for developing other illnesses.

Most healthcare professionals agree that a healthy lifestyle promotes a healthy immune system — and keeps infections at bay.

To help keep the immune system healthy, you can incorporate powerful immune-boosting herbals such as thyme, bee propolis, cinnamon extract, cloves, fennel seed extract, oregano, holy basil, black walnut hulls extract in your diet.
