A stroke occurs when blood flow to an area of the brain is interrupted. It can result in sudden numbness or sudden difficulty seeing, speaking, or understanding. If you experience this call 911 and seek medical attention immediately. Every minute counts.

Dr. Paul Antony says you are at higher risk for stroke if you have diabetes, high blood pressure, or if you smoke. Also, African Americans and Hispanics are at higher risk for stroke.

Every year about 700,000 people have a stroke. A lifestyle that includes a healthy diet and exercise can lower your chances for having a stroke. Talk to your doctor about treatment options to reduce your risk.
