Cancer Research Releases Statement on Kylie Minogue
Dr Lesley Walker, Director of Cancer Information for Cancer Research UK, says women have a better chance of discovering the disease at an early stage - the stage Kylie's disease is reported to be at.
Dr Lesley Walker, Director of Cancer Information for Cancer Research UK, says:
"We wish Kylie all the best for her forthcoming treatment and a speedy recovery.
Although a diagnosis of breast cancer can be distressing, the good news is that survival rates for breast cancer have never been higher.
Breast cancer typically affects older women, so women in their 30s should not be unduly worried - in 2001, 1,458 women aged between 35 and 39 were diagnosed with breast cancer in the UK, which is less than four per cent of all cases.
However, women of all ages should try to be 'breast aware' - this means that if you notice a change in your breasts, then you should talk it over with your doctor.
"By being breast aware women have a better chance of discovering the disease at an early stage - the stage Kylie's disease is reported to be at. Diagnosing the disease at this point improves a woman's chances of recovery. Once women reach 50 and are invited to attend a breast screening clinic they should ensure they attend their appointment.
"Women can also give themselves an advantage by being aware of any significant family history of the disease and keeping their doctor informed."
