BlackBerry wireless e-mail devices will soon come with Yahoo's Messenger software installed, allowing users to chat as well as send and receive e-mail on the go.
Colorful, graphical Yahoo Messenger clients will be installed on the devices in "coming months," BlackBerry maker Research In Motion says. Yahoo! instant message service will be installed on all BlackBerry devices in the next few months.
We are excited to extend the Yahoo! experience to millions of BlackBerry users around the world," Doug Garland, the senior vice president of Yahoo! Mobile said. "Yahoo! has become an essential part of the lives of millions of its users and by bringing the services they love to these great mobile devices we are making it easier for people to communicate however they want, anywhere, anytime."
RIM and Yahoo plan to offer an enhanced version of Yahoo's Mail service for Blackberrys in the future.
The two companies plan to pre-install full-color, graphical Yahoo Messenger clients on BlackBerry devices in the coming months, according to Yahoo.
"BlackBerry users will be able to access and connect with everyone on their friends list while they are on the go," Yahoo said in a statement.
Yahoo said its messenger service on the BlackBerry platform will allow consumers to see which friends are online, send and receive instant messages, have multiple conversations at once, participate in online conferences and even send and view emoticons.
Yahoo already has agreements with a number of mobile operators, including AT&T Wireless Services and T-Mobile USA, to offer Messenger to mobile customers.
Yahoo is not alone in offering its IM service beyond the desktop, as other leading IM providers Microsoft and America Online have also been wheeling and dealing with mobile providers, notes PC World.
BlackBerry, a wireless platform developed by RIM, provides messaging capabilities with its popular keyboards, large screens, intuitive navigation and push-based connectivity.
"Through our relationship with Yahoo!, BlackBerry users will enjoy another powerful communications option to keep them connected while away from their desk," said Mark Guibert, a vice president of RIM.
