One of Canada's most renowned agencies, Sutherland Models, is celebrating its 20th anniversary.
Ann Sutherland, president of Sutherland Models, who discovered supermodel Shalom Harlow at a 1990 CNE Concert, believes the modeling industry began to change in the early 1990’s as fashion designers and marketers began to seek a new look.
“Shalom is almost six feet tall and has 33 inch hips. In 1990 she was initially seen as a freak of nature. However, she was in fact on the leading edge of defining the new look and was immediately embraced by the world’s leading fashion designers including Karl Lagerfeld, Isaac Mizrahi and Michael Kors”, recalls Sutherland.
However, current catwalk star Lisa Cant, who has just been signed to Chanel for a cosmetics campaign, has a doll-like face with piercing blue eyes. Sutherland doubts whether Cant would have made it back in the 80’s when smiley blondes ruled the day.
And what’s the hottest modeling trend right now? Sutherland booking agents are abuzz with jobs for the girls with the most wanted looks for this season - the red heads. Claire Olesen, who has only been modeling for a month, has a ravishing, romantic look and has broken through with editorials in Flare, Glow and Lush. Statuesque Nelly Tsyrlin has appeared in Harper’s Bazaar, Flare and Fashion.
Sutherland Models now boasts 50 male and 70 female international models and has represented such high profile celebrities as Jill Hennessey of Crossing Jordan and Supermodels Shalom Harlow and Lisa Cant.
