Iran Defines Inappropriate Women's Fashion

Iran goes after inappropriately dressed women who, according to lawmakers, spread prostitution.

Iranian lawmakers are now introducing laws that will govern what it means for a woman to be dressed inappropriately and thus "spreading prostitution."

"The ones who spread prostitution and intentionally seek to disturb social and moral security by inappropriate clothing and behaviour will be firmly confronted," Tehran's hardline prosecutor Saeed Mortazavi said, the state news agency IRNA reported on Saturday.

"It has been noticed that some people with an outrageous appearance in public hurt religious feelings and beliefs," he said.

The fashion crackdown would start on March 6 and continue for a month. Among targets are "street women who get into cars as passengers and rob or extort the drivers," government official said.

Islamic dress code demands that very post-pubescent woman covers her hair and body in public in Iran. Short bright dresses, flimsy headscarves and capri pants are prohibited, even in summer. [TORONTO DAILY NEWS]
