Haute Couture Evil in The Devil Wears Prada

The movie takes a bitter look at the world of glossy magazines, but instead of criticism delivers a healthy dose of envy.

"The Devil Wears Prada," as that spot-on title would indicate, takes place in the world of haute couture. And that pretty much sums up the movie. Pretty similar to "Monster-In-Law," the movie takes a bitter look at the world of glossy magazines, but instead of criticism delivers a healthy dose of envy.

Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway star as powerful fashion magazine editor Miranda Priestly and her assistant Andrea Sachs, respectively. Adrian Grenier and Tracie Thoms round out the leads as Andrea's love interest and best friend.

Supermodel Gisele Bündchen also has her second speaking role in a feature film.

"The Devil Wears Prada" is based on the best-seller by Lauren Weisberger, who did a stint as an assistant to Anna Wintour, the all-powerful editor of Vogue. Anna Wintour has publicly warned all designers who chose to participate in the movie that they would be banned from Vogue pages.

Starlett Ann Hathaway plays Andy Sachs, a fashion-challenged graduate who takes a job as an assistant to Miranda, editor of Runway magazine, played by Meryl Streep. With her awkward fashion sense and naivete Miranda enters the world of fashion transformed by Chanel outfit, stiletto Jimmy Choos and a new hairstyle. With the help of designer Jeff Gonchor, costumer Patricia Field and cinematographer Florian Ballhaus the world on fashion media is rather admired, not being joked at.

"With its grudging admiration for fashion-fabulous costumes and for this glamorous lifestyle, the film idolizes that which it would skewer," Kirk Honeycutt for Reuters notes.

Maybe writer Lauren Weisberger wasn't at all happy to leave Vogue, and this is rather not a revenge but a nostalgic look back?

Well, at least she can buy zillions of Jimmy Choos now, as the movie is destined to be a hit.
