Live8 May Take Place in Toronto

Ottawa out, Toronto in: one of the cities is in talks to play host to Live 8 concert which will take place in London, Paris, Berlin, Philadelphia and Rome before G8 meeting in July.

Now Canadian Live 8 concert organizers say Toronto - not Ottawa - is the "logical" place for the historic July 2 event and they have a "spectacular" lineup, reports Ottawa Sun.

Philip Maher of World Vision says that a famous concert promoter Michael Cohl, one of the major players behind the 2003 SARS benefit concert, is working on this project.

There are rumors that in addition to Bryan Adams, The Barenaked Ladies, Jann Arden, and Our Lady Peace the Canadian Live8 will feature Rolling Stones.

Rolling Stones will be warming up in Toronto for their upcoming world tour.

Originally Live 8 concert was planned to be held on Parliament Hill in Ottawa but soon was cancelled because the officials were worried of the damage to the historical site. Plus, the city can't handle the expected 150,000 people who would attend the event, according to CTV.

The aim of Live 8 concerts is to create attention and "political heat" ahead of the G-8 meeting to persuade the leaders to agree to cancel Africa's unpayable debts, double aid for the continent and make trade fair, Bob Geldof said.

"We don't want people's money. We want them," Bob Geldof said during a press conference Tuesday announcing the Live 8 concerts.

Live 8 concerts will be free. Musicians will donate their services, and other costs will be met by corporate sponsors.

In addition to Canada, plans are said to be still in the works for Live 8 concerts in Japan and Russia. There’s no information yet about such concerts.
