Alchemists spent centuries looking for the elixir of youth, and DMAE seems to come pretty close.

DMAE (dimethylaminoethanol) makes sagging, tired skin look smoother and tighter by causing quick and visible swelling of cell membranes, fibroblasts.

But such shortcuts often come with a price. Canadian scientists found that a topical application of DMAE alters vital skin functions.

 

“Skin cells treated with DMAE died 25 per cent slower,” said Dr. Francois Marceau of the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Quebec, “Cells stop dividing and secreting. I don’t want to scare people,” he added. “The risk is probably not very big.”
