LUSH is the first name that pops in one's mind when we talk all-natural, vegan or organic skincare. What are the benefits of going natural? We asked that question to Ali Fillmore, promotion manager of LUSH in North America.
Why do you think people turn to natural skincare solutions these days?
Isn't it great? More and more people are aware of what they are putting in their bodies as well as on their bodies and want to choose products that lead to a healthier self. Through research and media, people are learning more about the natural side of beauty and hygiene. Beside, natural skincare is easier on the conscience and has amazing health benefits.
Did you estimate how much environmental damage you can avoid if you opt for natural skincare?
It's not like we have done heavy research regarding this. We feel that it's common sense that there will be less of a negative impact on the environment if the waste that's going into the environment is less laden with chemicals and preservatives. What we do know is if approximately 57,000,000 people of Britain used LUSH solid shampoos, then the waste of 22 million bottles would be prevented. If the same people were to use liquid shampoo, then not only would 22 million bottles be wasted, 6.5 metric tons of preserved shampoo would be released into the environment as well. If they were to use LUSH solid shampoos, then only ½ million metric tons of un-preserved substance would enter the environment.
What is the most potent ingredient used in LUSH skincare line?
I would say that papaya (found in Enzymion, a facial moisturizer for oily skin, as well as Recon, a scalp conditioner and I Love Juicy Shampoo) has been a great natural ingredient that contains the enzyme papain, of which has the ability to breakdown the dirt and grime and mop up the oil on the surface of the skin and scalp. This will make the skin look more radiant as well as keeping the scalp healthy.
Where do you get all the recipes?
LUSH product creators have more than 25 years experience of making bath and body products. They are very much influenced by cookbooks, fresh produce markets, ethnic cultures, ancient beauty recipes, healthy food.
What is your most favorite product with LUSH?
Ooh, that's a hard one to answer - I have so many! My fave list seems to change quite a bit depending on my moods and new products that come out. Right now, I'm in love with Skin's Shangri La facial moisturizer, Whipstick lip balm, Chai shower gel, Ginger fragrance range perfume, soap, dusting powder and bath bomb.
What's the story behind your fragrances?
It's very special to note that LUSH does not go to a fragance manufacturer to have its fragrances made, as so many cosmetic companies do. Mark Constantine is not only a founder and main innovative force behind LUSH, but he also creates ALL the fragrances for the products. He's a 'nose' that's able to work with various essential oils and other fragrance materials to come up with the right fragrance for each product. His son, Simon, has been training to be perfumer as well and he's been working with Dad and Mom on certain fragrances
What's your dream product that you wish LUSH created in future?
A body moisturizer with a seaweed gel base. I absolutely LOVE the soothing, softening and rejuvenating effects of this veg from the sea. We already have Skin's Shangri La for the face that's packed with Tooth Wracked Seaweed and this baby does wonders for my dry, eczema-prone skin, so I'd love to see something for the body.
