No Kimono is the first exhibition in Canada to explore the Japanese underground fashion movement.
Today, the influence of Tokyo street fashion, first documented by photographer Shoichi Aoki over a decade ago, can be seen on streets around the world, and continues to inspire fashion designers. No Kimono is a fitting name for this collection of surprising work – civil disobedience that you can wear.
The fashion show was truly a collision of textiles, asymmetry, colour and pattern that defy established norms. Using clothing as canvas, designers from Tokyo, Toronto and Montreal mold their vision into conceptual pieces that surprisingly seem to be quite wearable.
The opening party at the Design Exchange featured live fashion and art performance choreographed by Japanese and Canadian designers followed by an afterparty with DJ Will Munro of Vazaleen and DJ Sanfrandisco of CKLN. Among the participants: avant-garde artists Hiromi Kani, Denise Gagnon, Lydia Klenk, Takayuki Suzuki, and Shinichi Miter.
The exhibition opens December 6, 2004 and will take place until January 13, 2005 (closed December 23 to January 2) on the ground floor of the Design Exchange. Exhibition is curated by Rafi Ghanaghounian. Among the partners of No Kimono are Edward Day Gallery, in 75th Anniversary of Japan and Canada relations, are Seneca School of Fashion and Merchandising and Consulate General of Japan.
